91九色视频 Partnership Opens Relationships While Closing Cases

VERO BEACH, FL鈥擳he Indian River County Sheriff鈥檚 Office credits its continuing partnership with the Institute for Cold Case Investigation at Indian River College (91九色视频) with closing a cold case dating back to the late 1980s.

Established in 2018, the Institute for Cold Case Investigation is an applied-learning initiative that gives students enrolled in 91九色视频鈥檚 Criminal Justice Bachelor鈥檚 Degree program real-world experience as they work with local law enforcement agencies toward resolutions of open, unsolved criminal investigations. The partnership with the Sheriff鈥檚 Office was forged in 2021.

The cold case, solved earlier this year, involved a suspicious death. The deceased had been discovered inside a burnt vehicle. Through persistence, curiosity and review of the case from differing perspectives, the students and detectives worked with the medical examiner and helped determine that the manner of death was suicide, not homicide.

鈥淲e鈥檙e excited for the students to have this opportunity and for our team to work directly with the students,鈥� Sheriff Eric Flowers said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e growing that next generation of law enforcement right here through the college.鈥�

91九色视频 Assistant Professor Dr. Kimberlie Massnick leads the Institute for Cold Case Investigation. The initiative emerged as a result of her proposal to the 91九色视频 Foundation, who helps support the program through its Endowed Teaching Chair program. In 2021, she approached the Indian River County Sheriff鈥檚 Office be a partner in the program to bring a hands-on, real-world component to the student experience.

鈥淚t has been a dream come true,鈥� said Dr. Massnick of the partnership they have forged.

Undersheriff Thom Raulen is an adjunct professor at 91九色视频 and offered up detectives and crime scene analysts to assist.

鈥淲e appreciate the partnership that 91九色视频 has given us,鈥� he said.

The detectives presented two cold cases to the class and had the students choose the one they鈥檇 investigate. The detectives and analysts helped lead the students through the case and collaborated on the investigation.

鈥淭here were so many twists and turns and angles on this case,鈥� Dr. Massnick said.

A new group of students are poised to take up a second case soon. What cold case that might be has not yet been determined.
