THE VETERANS CELEBRATION HAS BEEN POSTPONED. Due to the potential impact of Subtropical Storm Nicole, 91¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ will be closed to employees, students, and visitors on Wednesday, November 9 and Thursday, November 10. This event will be rescheduled.
PORT ST. LUCIE—The Department of Military and Veterans Services and Indian River State College (91¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ) will honor all students, staff, faculty, and community members who are veterans with a celebration on Thursday, November 10, 2022, at the College’s Pruitt Campus, 500 N.W. California Blvd., in Port St. Lucie.
World War II veteran Ray Glansberg is recognized with a special Veteran Pinning Ceremoney at last year's event.
The celebration begins at 10 a.m. in the Veterans Center of Excellence (VCE) Auditorium. There is no cost to attend and the celebration is open to the public.
This year’s featured speaker is Roger E. Wehner, a retired member of the United States Army Special Forces who is currently the Director of Economic Development for Amazon Web Services (AWS) Economic Development, which includes incentives, compliance, economics research, and workforce development teams.
Wehner retired as Sargent First Class after 15 years with the Army’s Signals Intelligence
(SIGINT) Special Reconnaissance unit. Since then he has worked in international trade
and management consulting, the aerospace industry, and in economic development at
the local, regional, utility, and state levels.
The veteran’s celebration also will include a cake-cutting ceremony—a military tradition in which the oldest serving veteran in the audience joins the youngest enlisted person or veteran from the audience to cut the first slice of cake with a ceremonial sword. The cake is decorated to honor all branches of the military.
As a surprise, a very special veteran will be honored for service in World War II during a pinning ceremony sponsored by Treasure Coast Hospice. Last year’s recipient in the pinning ceremony was Staff Sergeant Ray Glansberg, a 100-year-old World War II veteran who landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day, helped liberate Buchenwald, and helped end the siege of Bastogne by the Germans.
91¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ President Dr. Timothy Moore, a veteran of the United States Army, also will offer remarks.
